Lagoons and historic cities

Po Delta, Comacchio Lagoons, and Ravenna

In the Comacchio Lagoons, the landscape changes with the light: embankments, brackish lagoons, and fishermen’s huts alternate along the water’s edge. A tailor-made trip can combine birdwatching and cycling in the Delta with the Renaissance palaces of Ferrara and the mosaics of Ravenna.

The Po Delta and UNESCO Designations

UNESCO World Heritage Site

The site “Ferrara, City of the Renaissance, and its Po Delta” was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1995 for Ferrara; in 1999, the inscription was extended to include the cultural landscape of the Delta. The designation applies to the site as defined by UNESCO.

How to explore the Po Delta and its lagoons

Birdwatching in the Comacchio Lagoons

A visit can alternate between observation points and walks along the water. Sightings vary with the season and daily conditions. Photography enthusiasts can spend more time at each stop; those who prefer a shorter day can combine a visit to the Comacchio Wetlands with a tour of downtown Comacchio.

By bike or on the water

The paths along the levees let you explore the landscape at your own pace. When choosing a route, consider the wind, the terrain, and the distance you wish to cover. A boat tour, when available and conditions allow, offers another view of the lagoons and their traditional fishing huts.

Ferrara and Ravenna: Two Different Histories

Ferrara offers insight into the history of the Delta’s landscape through the Renaissance and the works of the Este family. In Ravenna, the journey shifts to a different era: San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia are among the eight early Christian monuments listed by UNESCO as a separate site.
